Copper Lanterns age gracefully over time and create a natural protective coating or patina.  New lanterns are dipped in acid to remove fingerprints and smudges before being shipped to our clients.  The acid dip makes the lanterns appear shiny like a new penny.  Clients can choose to have their lanterns dipped in a chemical that will facilitate the patina process.   A single dip will create a brown finish like a penny. A double dip will be very dark brown so it almost looks black. Lanterns can be sprayed with a chemical to start a green patina that is similar to the Statue of Liberty. If you want your lanterns to start to turn green you can spray them with salt water. I have had customers who wanted the green patina but were disappointed when they received them. They were expecting it to be green. It is green but it is more like an organic process.Finishes are a natural process so a lot of factors determine the exact shade. Weather conditions, temperatures, humidity etc will affect the color of the finish. Be sure to wear gloves when handling lanterns that have a finish on them. It takes a couple of months for it to become hard. If you don't wear gloves you will leave fingerprints.
